Dear Eagles and Friends:
Two important bills are moving toward a floor vote: SJR20, the Constitutional Amendment to marriage bill in the Senate and SB20, the Unborn Victims of Violence Bill (aka Laci and Connor bill) in the House.
First, SJR20, the Constitutional Amendment to marriage bill passed the Senate Finance committee yesterday and is in Rules. The committee amended the language of the bill and I have pasted the new text at the bottom so you can see it. The next stop is the Senate floor. We need you to pray for this bill to go to the Senate floor and pass. Pray especially for Senator Ben Stevens, Lyman Hoffman, Bettye Davis and Ralph Seekins.
HJR32, the companion bill to SJR20, is still in House Judiciary Committee and I am asking you to contact every member of that committee ASAP and ask them to please pass HJR32. We especially need to contact Rep. Lesil McGuire. We also need to pray for members of this committee, members of the entire House especially minority members who are receiving much pressure to vote against the bill, and pray for Lesil McGuire, Chair of House Judiciary, pray for Majority Leader John Coghill for encouragement and for Rep. John Harris for courage and leadership through this time. There are some in the House who do not want to deal with this issue. It makes them uncomfortable and they are receiving MUCH pressure not only from Democratic leadership but from the homosexual community in Juneau. They are being bullied by the opposition who are trying to bill this as a HATE bill. Our legislators need to know we want to vote on strengthening marriage in Alaska. We do not hate anyone, we love the institution of marriage and we want to protect it.
Call these Reps. and ask them to hear HJR32 in committee and pass it.

Second, SB20, the Laci and Connor bill is in House Rules and is up for a vote on the House floor Monday, May 1. I believe we have the votes to pass this bill but please pray for it.

01 Proposing an amendment to the section of the Constitution of the State of Alaska
02 relating to marriage.
03 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF ALASKA:
04 * Section 1. Article I, sec. 25, Constitution of the State of Alaska, is amended to read:
05 Section 25. Marriage and related limitations. To be valid or recognized in
06 this State, a marriage may exist only between one man and one woman. No other
07 union is similarly situated to a marriage. No provision of this constitution shall be
08 construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents of marriage be
09 conferred on a union other than the union of a man and woman.
10 * Sec. 2. The amendment proposed by this resolution shall be placed before the voters of the
11 state at the next general election in conformity with art. XIII, sec. 1, Constitution of the State
12 of Alaska, and the election laws of the state.
