EFA Legislative Alert, May 11, 2006

Dear Eagles and Friends:

I am back from Juneau and caught up on hugs and kisses, laundry, and school! Sleep is next!

Our Grassroots Lobby training class in Juneau was a success. We had twelve students attending the class. Lt. Governor Loren Leman and Mike Pauley were the teachers. Tuckerman Babcock was unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts with the legislature. The comments from all attending the classes were good. We had one high school student attend who tells me she had a great time and learned more in one day than she could have learned in a year of classroom study about the legislative process. We plan to do this again and will give you more advance notice so you can plan to attend. Do put Sept. 22-24 on your calendar for the annual Eagle Council in Washington, D.C. Phyllis Schlafly organizes the event and the speakers are tremendous and the fellowship is even better!

We ended the session with MANY victories. I want to thank you for your help in making those possible and thanks be to GOD and our Lord JESUS CHRIST! All good things come from God!

HOWEVER, we lost one very important battle. The legislature failed to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot to clarify that marriage is ONLY for one man and one woman and ditto the things that go along with marriage. The votes were not quite sufficient to pass SJR20/HJR32 and so this is what will happen next:

The state will begin implementing the issuance of spousal benefits to all homosexual partners of state employees. This will probably happen soon. Municipalities and private sector employers will soon have to follow suit or be charged with violating the “rights” of homosexual couples.

Even if the legislature deals with this issue IMMEDIATELY in January, the next opportunity to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot will be November, 2008. Not soon enough!

I have one last request of you. If you cared enough to read this far will you please call the office of Governor Frank Murkowski at (907) 465 3500 and ask the Governor to call a special session to allow the people of Alaska to vote on this constitutional amendment.

The bill that embodied this amendment is DEAD; it died on Tuesday at 5 PM. Our only remedy is for the Governor to call a special session and resurrect the bill.

Please call 907 465 3500 and tell Governor Murkowski you DO NOT WANT THE STATE TO PAY SPOUSAL BENEFITS TO HOMOSEXUAL PARTNERS OF STATE EMPLOYEES AND ASK HIM TO CALL A SPECIAL SESSION TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION SO THE PEOPLE CAN VOTE ON THIS ISSUE.

There is a high probability that the Governor will not call a special session but YOU HAVE NOT BECAUSE YOU ASK NOT. The worst he can so is no. Please pray about it and call 907 465 3500.

Working for the family,
