EFA Legislative Alert, March 20, 2006

SB20, the Laci and Connor bill, has been rescheduled to be heard in the House Judiciary Committee today, March 20 at 1:00 PM. If you have not contacted members of this committee, it is not too late. (contact information below)
I spent three days I Juneau this last week talking to legislators about the same-sex marriage benefits issue and the Laci & Connor bill. Hearings were scheduled on both of these bills and I planned to testify on behalf of both. Unfortunately, both hearings were cancelled at the last minute. The trip was not wasted however, as I filled the time allotted for hearings with more appointments with legislators on these bills. I was also invited to a small prayer meeting with believers from Juneau, time well spent! On Friday I met with three great pro-life activists from Juneau. It was wonderful to put the faces with the names and get a chance to discuss the issues in person. There are some really great folks living in Juneau. Those who stand for right in that community are often in the minority and are in the thick of the battle.
HJR32, the same-sex marriage benefits issue bill, may still be introduced in House Judiciary later this week. I will keep you posted.
I also attended a hearing on HB477, a new gaming bill that would extend the gaming permits to two years instead of the current one-year. We oppose this bill and the reasons were evident as the Dept. of Revenue and law enforcement and even bingo operators themselves testified that HB477 would INCREASE the theft, embezzlement and fraud problems that are already problematic in the gaming industry. HB477 is a bad bill and we are hopeful it will not go far.
